Located about three hours north of San Francisco, the Spanish-style lake vacation rental is located on Clear Lake, the largest natural lake in California. Construction of the resort began in 1906 and was intended to be a private mansion, but it was never occupied by the original owner, a banker who was jailed for embezzlement. The property also spent time as a speakeasy during prohibition and the training grounds for middleweight boxing champion Bobo Olson, as well as a popular restaurant and nightclub.

Today, this lake vacation rental, WorldMark Clear Lake, provides an ideal spot for a relaxing Clear Lake vacation getaway.

"We have an amazing view of Mt. Konocti, which is an active volcano, across the lake," she says. "And the Bartlett Mountains are right at our back door. When people come here, they always comment on how much they enjoy the view of the lake from our property, and how the area isn't crowded or busy."

For nature lovers, the area around this lake vacation rental offers plenty of activities that stimulate one's sense of adventure. Miles of nature trails offer opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and biking. Plus, there are 26 wineries within the county offering amazing tours and wine tastings.

The Clear Lake area is also a popular destination for bird watching, and has been designated as an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society, recognizing the more than 300 species that live or visit the area. The Great Blue Heron and the American White Pelican are particularly striking birds that are frequently seen around the lake.

According to Brokaw, the history of the area is fascinating to visitors, so every Saturday, local historian Walt Campbell speaks for about 45 minutes on the background of the resort and the history and geography of the area. Campbell is the Hospitality Director at Six Sigma Ranch and Winery, located about 30 miles from the resort, and a long-time area resident.

Of importance to fishing enthusiasts, Clear Lake is ESPN's second-ranked bass fishing destination in the world and numerous fishing tournaments are held on its waters. Bass, bluegill, Sacramento perch, large catfish, white and black crappies, brown bullheads, and carp are frequently caught at Clear Lake. Many other water sports, like sailing, canoeing, jet skis and more, are available for guests to enjoy.

"That's the main attraction, the lake," Brokaw says. "It's not the kind of lake where you lay out and get a tan because there really aren't any beaches, especially not at the resort. But if you want to relax and unwind in a really peaceful place with great views, this is the place."
