A breathtaking Grand Lake resort, the WorldMark Grand Lake holds the distinction as the only timeshare resort in the state of Oklahoma. While the resort is not adjacent to Grand Lake, it sits on a peninsula, just a few hundred feet from the water in three directions.
About a three-hour drive to the southwest of WorldMark Lake of the Ozarks, this Grand Lake resort is on a golf course with beautiful views of the fairways. "So," says Susan Blevins, Resort Manager, "our guests come here to relax and enjoy two things, mainly: the lake and golf."
Like Lake of the Ozarks, Grand Lake was created by the damming of a river to generate power. In the 1940s, the Pensacola Dam was built on the Grand River, creating a lake with almost 1,500 miles of shoreline. Today, Grand Lake is a popular destination for water lovers who enjoy waterskiing, sailing, jet skis, waverunners, parasailing, and especially fishing.
"The fishing is absolutely some of the best in the world," Blevins says. "There are major fishing tournaments on this lake every year. We get people who stay here because this is one of their favorite fishing spots."
Grand Lake provides habitat for a large variety of fish, including largemouth and smallmouth bass, blue catfish, black crappie, striped bass, bluegill and walleye. The spoonbill, also known as the paddlefish, trolls the bottom of the lake for food. Due to its odd appearance, most notably a large duckbill-shaped snout and a scaleless body, the spoonbill is a prized catch for many fishing enthusiasts.
Another popular activity among WorldMark Grand Lake guests is golf. The resort is adjacent to the Peninsula Resort & Club, an 18-hole course with several views of the lake while playing. Discounted rates are available for WorldMark owners.
According to Blevins, a lot of guests travel to the area in the fall to enjoy the colors as the leaves turn.
"The drive through Monkey Island to get to our Grand Lake resort is absolutely spectacular that time of year," she says. "I can't say enough about this whole area around the peninsula and Monkey Island. People come here for peace and quiet and that's what they get. It's a relaxing atmosphere with Grand Lake so close. The other thing I love about this area is that the people are so friendly. So if you're from one of the nearby big cities, like Kansas City or Dallas, and you just want to spend some time where people smile and say Hi' at the grocery store, you'll find that here."
