Taking a Golden Gate Bay Cruise is one of my favorite things to do in San Francisco.

A bay cruise is a nice way to see the city from a different angle. On a clear, warm day it's a real treat. However, it can be cold on the bay when you'd least expect it, fog and cold, damp air can move in fast even in mid-summer and a moving boat makes it feel that much colder It is great way to get away from the city so you can enjoy its skyline. The traditional cruise goes around Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening of the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean. It was the longest suspension bridge when it was constructed. It is recognized the world over as a symbol of San Francisco. Alcatraz Island is an island in the San Francisco bay which was used to house prisoners.

You have a lot of options, from the traditional sail around Alcatraz Island and under the Golden Gate Bridge to fascinating trips under the Bay Bridge, sunset sails and more.

You'll sail past the San Francisco skyline and view the lively neighborhood of North Beach and San Francisco Maritime National Park. As you head west toward the Golden Gate Bridge, cruise along Fort Mason and the Marina District which was devastated in the 1989 earthquake. This gives incredible photo opportunities when sailing directly under the massive span of the bridge.

Steaming back into the bay, you'll travel past the wildlife reserves of the Marin Headlands, Angel Island State Park and cruise around the island of Alcatraz.

Duration of the tour is around one hour. It is a family-friendly tour. Prices start from $24 per adult and $4 per child but it can vary a lot because there are many tour operators.
